My friend Adi and some Australian girl introduced me to this colorful, diverse and uplifting Australian band. Guided by heavy Latin influences, they go as far as Ska, Jazz, Funk and Rock N Roll. Check 'em out.

Elvis Costello's First 3 Albums

Declan Patrick McManus aka Elvis Costello, in only one of his primes. The time of his rise to the music world as one of the best composers, lyricists, producers and of course, dressers in the world. Production-wise, it may remind you alot of his other work at the time, such as The Specials debut album. Really weird balance, but cool original sounds, and the best pop hooks in history are probably spread throughout This Year's Model. Get to know this lovable nerd as soon as you can.

1977 - My Aim Is True

1978 - This Year's Model

1979 - Armed Forces

Discipline - Downfall of the Working Man (2005)

Holland has apparently made even more good shit besides just legalizing weed and prostitution. No, it's not their Hip-Hop... It's their Discipline! Ha! A Pun!

George Clinton - Hey Man... Smell My Finger (1993)

Yes, a disgusting title, I know. Nevertheless, this album is off the hook. In case you don't remember, this was the era when Dr. Dre-produced-Clinton-samples filled the airwaves and charts all over the world... And sho' nuff, Mr. President (of tha Funk) not only takes advantage of that, he also invites those dudes he's made so rich, Dre and Ice Cube, plus other cats , like Flea of RHCP and Herbie Hancock. That, of course, is without counting the obvious P-Funk Allstars Bernie Worrell, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and the mighty, tighty, the exact opposite of whitey, Mr. Bootsy Collins. Prince is the executive producer for this Paisley Park release, and even though this was the one year Prince has released his greatest masterpiece to date (the Love Symbol Album), the song here featuring Prince is oddly the downfall of this album...

Not a lot of short songs, for all you punk rockers, mostly 7 minutes tracks, but almost every one of them is pure 90's gold.

Lifetime

legendary melodic hardcore band. These guys are probably a huge influence on some of my LEAST favorite bands on the planet... But what can you do when someone gets your music wrong and starts some horrible, horrible emo band? You reunite and cut a new album in 2007, to show them where they got it wrong. Thank GOD! This is how you honestly write songs about your feelings without having your fuckin' balls fall off. Listen and learn.

Spank Rock - YoYoYoYoYo (2006)

An Underground Hip-Hop duo from Philadelphia. Found out about this one at an actual RECORD STORE... Remember those? Didn't think so. Anyway, this is one of the absolute best Hip-Hop albums of the year, definitely better than most albums released this year in the genre. The beats are so damn good, they sound somewhere along the lines of UK Garage or Grime mixed with Crunk and Techno. Awesome! They already played all over the US with the like of MIA (which rules) and even Beck (which is ok, but overrated). This album is mostly about sex. Sex, sex, sex... Probably the biggest obsession a Hip-Hop group has had with fucking since 2 Live Crew. Thse guys are REALLY into fucking. Now THAT is what makes a good rap album.

Go nuts

Authority Zero

Great Punk Rock band from Arizona. Really melodic and very eclectic, with some of best vocal work I've heard this century. They play their music tight, with might and just-right. Incredible pop sensibility in the hooks, for example the track "Revolution" from 2004's Andiamó, which they also contributed to the Rock Against Bush compilation, so all you kids could get to know them (that's how I did). Andiamó is definitely the most recommended one of the four albums, but I haven't seriously listened to the new one yet. The 2006 one, Rhythm & Booze, is a live acoustic show. Go nuts.

2002 - A Passage In Time

2004 -
Andiamó

2006 -
Rhythm & Booze

2007 - 12:34

Lead singer and main songwriter for Social Distortion in an almost all-covers album, lots of Rockabilly and old country tunes like Gamblin' Man, I Fought the Law, A Thief In The Night, Funnel of Love and that kinda shit.

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions (1973)

Like any other Stevie Wonder classic, it starts off quite mellow and burst into a funk explosion on track 3. Beautiful, beautiful album... should be studied all over the world. That's all I have to say about that...

Oh, and it's here

We own most of our own music, no one's got their hands in our pockets
